What Is Stem Cell Therapy?

Stem cells are undifferentiated biological cells with two remarkable properties: the ability to self-renew and the capacity to develop into many different specialised cell types. In clinical medicine, this makes them uniquely valuable as tools for cellular repair and regeneration.

At Lyfe Medical Wellness, we work with Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) — specifically Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells (UC-MSCs). These are ethically sourced from donated umbilical cord tissue after healthy births, with full donor consent and quality testing. UC-MSCs are preferred in clinical regenerative medicine for several reasons: they are harvested from young, healthy tissue; they have high potency and proliferative capacity; and because they are not derived from the patient’s own ageing cells, they avoid the decline in stem cell quality that occurs naturally over time.

Once administered, stem cells work through multiple mechanisms. They release growth factors and cytokines that modulate inflammation and stimulate the body’s own repair processes. They have immunomodulatory effects — helping to regulate an overactive immune response. And in certain contexts, they may differentiate into specialised cells to support tissue regeneration. The result is a broad regenerative signal that works throughout the body over weeks and months following treatment.

All stem cell therapy at Lyfe Medical Wellness uses UC-MSCs sourced from ethically donated umbilical cord tissue. Each batch is tested for sterility, viability and potency before clinical use — we do not administer cells that do not meet quality standards.

Administration is typically delivered via intravenous (IV) infusion, allowing the cells to circulate systemically. For joint-specific applications, a localised injection into the target joint may be used in addition to or in place of IV infusion, depending on the physician’s assessment.

Sessions are conducted at our Phuket clinic in a clinical setting, under the direct supervision of our physician. The treatment typically takes between 60 and 90 minutes.

Following treatment, patients are given clear post-treatment guidance. Stem cell therapy is not an overnight process — the regenerative cascade unfolds over weeks and months, with many patients reporting the most noticeable effects at 6 to 12 weeks post-treatment.

Common post-treatment experiences may include mild fatigue, a low-grade temperature or temporary discomfort at the injection site. These typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours and are considered normal responses to cellular activity.

Stem cell therapy is not appropriate for patients with active infections, certain active cancers, or those on specific immunosuppressive medications without specialist clearance. Our physician will review all relevant medical history before recommending any programme.
