UNDERSTANDING THE TREATMENT

What Are Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments used to add or restore volume, support facial contours, and soften selected lines or folds. At Lyfe Medical Wellness, we use hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally present in the body, including the skin and connective tissues. HA filler products are specially formulated injectable gels designed for use in different areas and tissue depths.

Dermal filler treatment is not simply about adding volume. The amount, placement and type of filler should be selected according to the individual facial anatomy, tissue characteristics and treatment objective. For this reason, every treatment begins with a facial assessment and discussion with our physician before any injection is performed.

Filler Is Not the Same as Botox

Dermal fillers and botulinum toxin work differently. Dermal fillers are used primarily to add or restore volume and modify selected facial contours. Botulinum toxin works by temporarily reducing the activity of selected muscles and is commonly used for dynamic expression lines. Depending on your concern, one treatment, the other, or neither may be the appropriate option.

UNDERSTANDING FACIAL CHANGE

Why Do Facial Volume & Contours Change?

The appearance of the face naturally changes over time. These changes are not caused by the skin alone. Ageing can involve changes in skin quality, facial fat compartments, bone structure, ligaments and other supporting tissues. Genetics, sun exposure, lifestyle and individual facial anatomy also influence how these changes appear.

As a result, some people may notice:

As a result, some people may notice:

  • Reduced cheek or midface volume
  • Changes around the eyes
  • Deeper facial folds
  • Changes in lip volume or definition
  • Reduced chin or jawline definition
  • Changes in overall facial proportions

Dermal filler may be one option for selected concerns, but not every age-related facial change should be treated with filler. The first step is therefore to understand what is creating the concern before deciding which treatment, if any, is appropriate.

WHAT DERMAL FILLERS CAN ADDRESS

What Can Dermal Fillers Be Used For?

Depending on facial anatomy and individual goals, hyaluronic acid fillers may be considered for:

01

Restoring Selected Areas of Volume

Filler can be used in areas where reduced volume contributes to changes in facial contour or proportion.

02

Facial Contouring

Carefully placed filler may be used to modify the appearance of areas such as the chin, jawline or cheeks where additional structure or projection is desired.

03

Lip Volume & Definition

Lip filler may be used to add volume, improve definition or address selected asymmetries while considering the natural proportions of the face.

04

Softening Selected Lines & Folds

Certain deeper facial lines or folds may be softened with filler where volume loss or facial structure contributes to their appearance.

Facial Balance & Proportion

In some patients, small changes in selected areas may help create a more balanced relationship between facial features.

Treatment Planning

The Goal Is Not to Fill Every Line

Some concerns are better addressed with botulinum toxin, skin treatments, energy-based treatments, thread lifting, or no treatment at all. Your physician will explain whether filler is appropriate for the concern you would like to address.

COMMON TREATMENT AREAS

Where Can Dermal Fillers Be Used?

01

Lips

Filler may be used to add lip volume, improve border definition, address selected asymmetries or adjust proportion according to the patient's natural anatomy.

02

Cheeks & Midface

Cheek or midface filler may be considered where additional volume or structural support is appropriate.

03

Chin

Chin filler may be used to modify projection, shape or proportion in relation to other facial features.

04

Jawline

Filler may be considered for selected patients who would like additional definition or structural contour along the jawline.

05

Nasolabial Folds & Marionette Area

Filler may sometimes be used to soften deeper folds around the nose and mouth. Treatment planning should consider the surrounding facial structure rather than simply injecting directly into every visible line.

FACIAL ASSESSMENT

Why Assessment Comes Before Filler

A request for a particular amount of filler does not necessarily mean that amount — or even filler itself — is the best option. Before treatment, our physician assesses your face as a whole rather than looking only at the area you would like injected.

This may include consideration of:

Facial anatomy and proportions
Areas of volume change
Skin and soft-tissue characteristics
Facial movement
Symmetry and natural differences between each side of the face
Previous filler or aesthetic treatments
Medical history and relevant medications
Your concerns and treatment goals

Your physician can then explain what filler may realistically change, what it cannot change, and whether another treatment may be more appropriate.

Treatment Philosophy

Sometimes Less Is More

More filler does not necessarily produce a better result. Where treatment is appropriate, the amount and placement should be determined by the individual anatomy and treatment objective, rather than using a standard quantity for every patient.

PERSONALISED TREATMENT

How Is Dermal Filler Treatment Personalized?

Different facial areas have different anatomical and structural requirements. Hyaluronic acid fillers also vary in characteristics such as firmness, flexibility and intended tissue placement. Your physician therefore considers several factors when planning treatment:

Factors Considered During Treatment Planning

01
The area being treated
02
Your underlying facial anatomy
03
The amount of correction or enhancement being considered
04
Existing facial proportions
05
Previous filler treatments
06
The characteristics of the filler product
07
Your preferences and aesthetic goals

The treatment plan may involve one area or several carefully selected areas, depending on the assessment.

FACIAL BALANCE

Natural Facial Differences Are Normal

No face is perfectly symmetrical. Dermal filler may improve selected differences, but treatment should not be expected to create perfect symmetry. The aim is to work with your existing anatomy rather than create an entirely different facial structure.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What Happens During Dermal Filler Treatment?

01

Before Treatment

Your physician will review your medical history, previous aesthetic treatments, current medications and the area you would like to address. Your facial anatomy is assessed and the proposed treatment, product, amount, expected changes and relevant risks are discussed before proceeding.

02

During Treatment

The treatment area is prepared and filler is carefully injected according to the planned placement. A topical anesthetic may be used where appropriate, and some hyaluronic acid filler products also contain local anesthetic to improve comfort during injection. Treatment time varies depending on the area and complexity of the procedure.

03

Immediately After Treatment

You may notice an immediate change in volume or contour, but this should not be considered the final appearance. Temporary swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising can occur following treatment and may temporarily affect the appearance or symmetry of the treated area.

04

Follow-Up

The treated area may be reviewed after the initial swelling has settled, particularly where further assessment or staged treatment is appropriate. Additional filler should not automatically be added before the initial treatment has had time to settle.

UNDERSTANDING RESULTS

What Results Can You Expect From Dermal Fillers?

Hyaluronic acid fillers can create visible changes in volume, contour or selected facial lines, depending on the area treated and the individual patient. However, the result varies according to:

01
Facial anatomy
02
Product selected
03
Amount and placement
04
Treatment area
05
Tissue characteristics
06
Metabolism and lifestyle
07
Previous treatments

Results are temporary. How long a filler remains noticeable varies considerably between individuals and treatment areas, so a precise duration cannot be guaranteed.

What Fillers Cannot Do

Dermal filler does not stop facial aging and cannot address every aesthetic concern. It may not be the appropriate treatment for concerns primarily related to muscle movement, significant skin laxity, skin texture, pigmentation or other structural changes.

Where filler is unlikely to address your main concern, our physician can explain other treatment options rather than recommending additional filler.

SAFETY & MEDICAL SUITABILITY

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

Are Dermal Fillers Safe?

Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are widely used in aesthetic medicine, but all injectable treatments carry potential risks. Common temporary effects can include:

Swelling
Bruising
Redness
Tenderness
Temporary unevenness while swelling settles

Less common complications can also occur, including infection, persistent lumps or nodules, inflammatory reactions or unintended movement of filler. A rare but important complication is injection of filler into or around a blood vessel, which can interfere with blood supply to surrounding tissue and requires urgent medical assessment and treatment.

For this reason, filler treatment should involve appropriate knowledge of facial anatomy, careful injection technique, suitable products and the ability to recognize and manage complications.

Hyaluronic Acid Filler Can Be Dissolved When Clinically Appropriate

One characteristic of HA filler is that it can be broken down using an enzyme called hyaluronidase when medically indicated. This does not mean every unwanted result can be instantly or completely reversed, and hyaluronidase itself has clinical considerations. Your physician will determine whether its use is appropriate.

Who May Need to Delay or Avoid Treatment?

Dermal filler may not be appropriate in certain situations, including some cases involving active skin infection or inflammation around the treatment area, pregnancy or breastfeeding, certain medical conditions, medications, allergies, or previous filler complications. Suitability is reviewed individually before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The appropriate amount depends on the treatment area, facial anatomy, existing volume, product selected and the degree of change being considered. Rather than choosing a fixed number of syringes before assessment, your physician will recommend an amount based on your individual treatment plan.

Filler changes facial volume and contour, so the result depends significantly on patient selection, treatment planning, product choice and placement. During consultation, you can discuss how subtle or noticeable a change you would like. Your physician will also explain what is appropriate for your anatomy and proportions.

Dermal fillers are temporary, but there is no single duration that applies to every patient. Longevity varies according to the filler product, treatment area, amount used, metabolism, facial movement and other individual factors. Your physician can provide more specific guidance for the product and area being considered.

Patients may experience some discomfort during injection. Topical anaesthetic may be used where appropriate, and some HA filler products contain local anaesthetic. Sensitivity can vary depending on the treatment area and individual patient.

Some swelling, redness, tenderness or bruising is expected after filler treatment. The degree and duration vary according to the treatment area, amount injected and individual response. Your treatment may therefore look different immediately after injection compared with its appearance once the area has settled.

Hyaluronic acid fillers can be broken down with hyaluronidase when clinically appropriate. Dissolving filler is itself a medical procedure and should be assessed individually rather than considered an automatic or risk-free reversal.

They may be used within the same overall aesthetic treatment plan because they address different concerns. Botulinum toxin primarily targets selected muscle activity, while dermal filler changes volume or contour. Your physician will advise whether either or both treatments are appropriate and how they should be timed.

Possibly. Please tell your physician which product was used, where it was injected, approximately how much was used and when treatment was performed, if known. Previous filler should be considered before additional treatment is planned.

Cost depends on the filler product, treatment area and amount required. Following your facial assessment, our team can explain the recommended treatment plan and associated cost before you decide whether you would like to proceed.
