What Is PRP?

What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma — PRP — is produced from your own blood. A small blood sample is drawn, then placed in a centrifuge that separates and concentrates the platelets and growth factors from the rest of the blood components. This concentrated PRP is then injected directly into the target area — in this case, a joint or surrounding connective tissue.

Platelets are best known for their role in clotting, but they are also a rich source of growth factors: PDGF (platelet-derived growth factor), TGF-beta (transforming growth factor), IGF (insulin-like growth factor) and others. When concentrated and delivered to damaged tissue, these growth factors signal the body to initiate repair — stimulating collagen production, reducing inflammation, promoting tissue regeneration and improving cellular function in the treated area.

Because PRP is derived entirely from your own blood, the risk of immune reaction or rejection is minimal. It is a biological therapy that works with your body’s own repair mechanisms rather than introducing foreign substances.

What Joint Conditions Does PRP Therapy Help?

PRP joint therapy at Lyfe Medical Wellness is focused specifically on musculoskeletal and joint applications. Conditions that may benefit include:

  • 1
Knee osteoarthritis — early to moderate stages with cartilage degeneration and inflammation
  • 2

Cartilage wear and joint degeneration in other areas including hip, shoulder or ankle

  • 3

Tendon injuries — including patellar tendinopathy, Achilles tendinopathy and rotator cuff conditions

  • 4

Ligament damage and sports injuries where tissue repair is needed

  • 5

Chronic joint inflammation and pain not responding adequately to conservative treatment

  • 6

Post-surgical recovery support — to accelerate healing following orthopaedic procedures

If you are considering PRP for facial rejuvenation or hair restoration, those applications are available separately through our Aesthetic Treatments department. This page is dedicated to joint and musculoskeletal PRP administered by our regenerative medicine physician, Dr. Aek.

How Is PRP Therapy Performed at Lyfe Medical Wellness?

PRP Therapy vs Surgery — A Non-Surgical Alternative for Joint Pain

For many patients with joint pain — particularly knee osteoarthritis — PRP therapy is explored as a way to delay or avoid surgery, or as a complement to post-surgical recovery. PRP is not a replacement for surgery in all cases. For end-stage joint destruction where the structural integrity of the joint is severely compromised, surgical intervention may still be necessary. However, for early to moderate stages of osteoarthritis, tendon injuries and cartilage degeneration, evidence for PRP is increasingly well-established in the orthopaedic literature. Many patients who proceed with PRP report reductions in pain, improved mobility and a prolonged period before any surgical discussion is needed. Our physician will give you an honest assessment of what PRP can and cannot achieve for your specific situation.

Your PRP Therapy Journey at Lyfe Medical Wellness

A full PRP session — from blood draw to completion — is typically completed within 60 to 90 minutes. No anaesthetic recovery time is required.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Joint PRP Therapy?

  • Adults experiencing joint pain, stiffness or reduced mobility — particularly of the knee

  • Patients with early to moderate osteoarthritis who want to avoid or delay surgery

  • Athletes with tendon or ligament injuries seeking faster, biology-supported recovery

  • Patients post-surgery who want to support tissue healing and reduce recovery time

  • International patients wanting physician-supervised PRP at a fraction of the cost in their home country

Is PRP Therapy Safe?

Because PRP is derived entirely from the patient’s own blood, the risk of immune reaction or rejection is minimal — it is one of the most biologically compatible therapies available. Common post-treatment experiences include localised soreness, mild swelling and temporary discomfort at the injection site, which typically resolve within 48 to 72 hours. Patients are generally advised to avoid anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) in the days following PRP, as these can interfere with the inflammatory repair process that PRP initiates. Your physician will provide full post-treatment guidance.

PRP Therapy — Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients receive one to three sessions. The number and spacing depend on your condition, severity and response to the first session. Your physician will advise after assessment.

Results typically develop gradually over 4 to 8 weeks following treatment as the tissue repair process progresses. Some patients report meaningful improvement after a single session; others benefit most from a series.

Some discomfort is expected during and immediately after the injection — particularly into a joint where inflammation is present. Local anaesthetic can be used to reduce discomfort. Most patients find the procedure manageable. Your physician will discuss pain management at your consultation.

Yes — PRP and stem cell therapy can be used as part of a combined joint regeneration protocol. Your physician will advise on whether combining approaches is appropriate for your specific condition.
